World Turtle Day began in the year 2000 and was started by the American Tortoise Rescue, which is a rescue organization run from Malibu, California in the USA - founded in 1990. World Turtle Day, is a day to celebrate turtles and examine ways to enhance turtle conservation efforts, as turtles in the wild are increasingly threatened by a variety of pressures. One threat to wild turtle populations, unfortunately, includes the pet trade. Turtles can be wonderful pets but need a great deal of care and dedication. Turtle Day is celebrated worldwide, especially among those for whom the turtle is a symbolic animal. People such as the turtle-related group known as The Goffles may celebrate turtle day in a variety of manners, some of which are dressing up as turtles or saving turtles caught on highways. Other groups also recognize the importance of this holiday to turtles worldwide.

This Institute is currently leading the effort to get the state to rewrite the 1991 law in that allows developers to buy permits from the state to bury alive gopher tortoises in the burrows that they live in, on the land they wish to develop. Thousands of gopher tortoises, throughout Florida, have been buried alive, crushed by bulldozers, legally, due to this regulation. The money will also go to help the costs of relocating the gopher tortoises the Institute has been able to save from the developer's so-called legal actions.
